Discipline

I never knew discipline until recently.I am not talking about the type of discipline that a parent instills in their kids when they are not behaving appropriately. I am talking about self-discipline. The kind that successful people talk about and have actually placed it into action. I can go on and on about what I did or didn't do as a child and later as a young adult and how it wasn't instilled in me. But instead I want to tell you how as an adult in the last two years it has helped me.

I remember seeing people or hearing of people that wake up super early and when I did the first thing that would come to my head and then my mouth was “oh I could never do that I am not a morning person”. What I failed to realize is that no one is a morning person you make yourself a morning person by disciplining yourself to get up and get going. It was a hard pill to swallow because I realized how many opportunities I had missed because of my false thinking and lack of discipline.

Over last few months and actually the last 3 years I have slowly acquired discipline. It started with getting up early to make our juice and take our vitamins, later it transitioned and added on working out for 30 minutes a day and to what I do now. I wake up at 4:30ish (still working on it) and go down stairs and make my coffee. I sit down and read a book for about 45 minutes. I then walk myself back upstairs and get ready to exercise. I get on my elliptical for 40 minutes and sometimes if I am really motivated 60 minutes. Once I am done I start to get ready for work. One thing that helped is that my 7 and 9 year old are pretty independent. Yes, I planned it that way but that's a topic for another day and another time.

Discipline they say is getting up and doing the things that no one else is doing. But let me tell you it's a work in progress because just like everyone else there are days I just don't want to get up and get going but I remember all the wasted years and that helps me plant my feet on the ground and go.
